Auto repair, body shops, and dealerships

Auto shop signs in Columbus

Auto shop signs in Columbus have to work from the road and once a driver is on the lot. A repair shop, body shop, tire dealer, or dealership usually needs a primary storefront mark, a monument or pylon when the building sits back from the street, window graphics for hours and services, and directional signs for service bays.

Signs an auto shop usually needs

Start with the landlord’s rules and a photo of the bay or the lot. The sign type follows from those, not from a logo drawn for a website.

Channel letters

The primary mark on the facade. Many auto shops sit in a strip center that requires individual letters on a raceway painted to the fascia. Front-lit letters stay readable after dusk, which matters when the shop takes evening drop-offs. Non-illuminated letters still make sense where soffit lighting already washes the band, or the criteria forbid electrical signs.

Monument and pylon signs

A low monument at the drive, or a taller pylon on a corridor, is how drivers find a shop that does not sit on the sidewalk. Multi-tenant auto parks and some dealerships share one monument and give each brand or department a line on it. We size the cabinet to the site and the setback instead of dropping in a catalog kit.

Window graphics

Hours, services, a logo, or a frosted band on the glass when the fascia is already full or the criteria limit wall signs. We print and install the graphics in-house. Window film is often treated differently from a permanent wall sign, and a landlord may still limit how much glass you can cover.

Bay numbers and lot directionals

Service-bay numbers, customer-parking signs, and arrows to the body shop or the waiting room are interior and site wayfinding — the same department signs and corridor work we already fabricate. They are not the exterior graphics permit. If a room or bay needs accessible identification, that is a separate interior sign from the window hours.

Repair when existing letters go dark

A dark letter on a cabinet that is otherwise sound is often a module or a power supply, not an automatic replacement. Send photos and the city. We confirm the fault on site. A photo is enough to start; it is not a diagnosis, and we do not quote a turnaround until we have seen the sign.

Landlord criteria, permits, lighting, and lead time

Auto-shop jobs slip when fabrication starts before the center has approved the drawing, or before we know whether the sign is lit. The order below is the one that avoids a sign you cannot hang.

Landlord and strip-center criteria

Many repair shops and some body shops lease. The lease or a landlord sign criteria sheet usually sets letter height, whether a raceway is required, raceway color, and whether illumination is required or forbidden. A dealership on its own pad still may have brand or corporate sign standards. Send that document with the bay or lot photo. We design to the page that governs your frontage. We do not invent criteria the PDF does not contain, and we cannot approve the sign on the landlord’s behalf.

City of Columbus and suburb permits

A new raceway, illuminated letters, or a monument in the City of Columbus typically needs a graphics permit. Ground signs also involve height and setback. Replacing a tenant panel in an existing cabinet is not automatically exempt: the city has a face-replacement path. Tell us whether the cabinet, the raceway, or only the artwork is changing. Window graphics and a short-run banner are not the same filing as a lighted letter set.

Shop addresses in Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard, Grove City, Gahanna, and other suburbs are different filings. We do not copy the Columbus size threshold onto those cities. Historic overlays matter when the shop is on an older commercial block. The permit decoder covers the Columbus triggers. We confirm the jurisdiction from the address and do not publish fees or review times.

Illumination

Shops that take evening drop-offs need the letters or the monument to read after dusk. Front-lit faces are the most readable from the road and are the usual strip-center spec. Halo lighting is less common on a raceway and is sometimes disallowed by criteria that specify face-lit letters. Non-illuminated letters can work where existing lighting already washes the fascia, and they can avoid an electrical inspection. If the raceway is shared or existing, new wiring has to land in that electrical plan — we look at it before specifying LEDs.

Lead time

There is no single shop turnaround. Landlord approval and, where it applies, permit review sit on the calendar ahead of fabrication. A window-hours graphic is a shorter path than a new illuminated letter set or a monument with a footing. If you have an opening date or a rebrand date, say so. We confirm a production window with the quote after we know the address, the sign types, and whether a criteria sheet exists.

Maintenance

Weather, daily on and off cycles, and a shop environment are what age an auto-service sign. A faded face, a section of LEDs out, or a raceway that no longer sits flat are service jobs when the cabinet is still sound. If it is not, we will say so and quote a new sign instead of a repair that is likely to fail again. There is no public storefront — we schedule the visit.

What to send with an auto-shop sign quote

  • The city or suburb, the plaza or dealership name if there is one, and photos of the facade and the lot.
  • Any landlord, brand, or corporate sign criteria, including letter height, raceway, and illumination.
  • Whether you need channel letters, a monument or pylon, window graphics, bay directionals, or a combination.
  • An opening or rebrand date if one is fixed.
  • If the current sign is dark or damaged: photos of what it is doing, and whether you want repair, replacement, or both.

How an auto-shop sign package usually moves

  1. 01

    Criteria and the bay

We read the center’s rules, or the dealership’s brand sheet, against a photo of your frontage before anyone picks a letter height from a logo file.

  2. 02

A drawing the landlord can mark

The first deliverable is often an elevation for the property manager, not a finished cabinet. Fabrication waits on that approval when the lease requires it.

  3. 03

Permit, if the sign needs one

Illuminated letters, new raceways, and many monuments are filed before they are built. Window graphics stay on their own path.

  4. 04

    Build and install

Fabrication is in-house. Install includes electrical hookup when the sign is lit. Bay numbers and window hours can go in on a shorter path once the copy is final.

A shop truck or shuttle is a separate layout from the building. That work is a vehicle wrap or fleet graphic, quoted on its own so the landlord review is not holding the van. Vehicle wraps and fleet graphics

FAQ

Auto shop sign questions

What signs does a Columbus auto shop usually need?
Most need a primary storefront mark — often channel letters on a raceway — plus one or more of a monument or pylon, window graphics, and bay or lot directionals. A dealership on its own pad may need the monument more than a tenant panel. We scope that from the address and photos, not from a standard package.
Can you match our shopping center’s sign criteria?
That is the normal strip-center job. Send the criteria and the bay. We size letters, panels, and raceways to the limits written there. If the center requires a specific vendor, we will tell you rather than fabricate a sign the property manager will reject. We do not invent criteria the PDF does not contain.
Do window graphics and bay signs need the same permit as channel letters?
No. In Columbus, temporary signs, window graphics, and banners can follow different sections than a permanent illuminated letter set. Interior bay numbers are not the exterior graphics permit. We confirm the path for the address. See the Columbus sign permit decoder for the city’s published triggers, and do not assume a suburb uses the same thresholds.
Should we use front-lit or halo-lit letters?
Front-lit faces read farther from the road and are the usual spec on a strip-center raceway. Halo-lit letters put a glow on the wall behind the letter and are less common on auto bays. If the landlord or the brand sheet specifies one of them, that decides it. Non-illuminated letters remain an option when the fascia is already lit.
How long does an auto-shop sign take?
There is no single number of days. Landlord approval and, where it applies, a Columbus or suburb permit sit ahead of fabrication. Window graphics are a shorter path than a new illuminated letter set or a monument. We confirm a production window with the quote after we have the address, the sign types, and the criteria. We do not promise a turnaround without those.
How do we request an auto-shop sign quote?
Use the quote form at artiplexsigns.com/quote/, call 614-706-6706, or email henry@artiplexsigns.com. Include the city, facade and lot photos, any landlord or brand criteria, and whether you need letters, a monument, window graphics, or bay directionals. There is no public storefront.
